A study has been carried out recently on whether parents take pride in their children. Having surveyed the students of our school and their parents, we finally got the results, as is shown in the chart. 80% of the parents surveyed said that they did, while 60% of the student subjects gave the same answer.

Where dose the twenty percentage go? From my perspective, two factors contribute to it. On one hand, in the Chinese traditional educational pattern, parents would rather show their pride behind children’s back for fear that they might be too over-confident to behave well. When it comes to face-to-face conversations, parents prefer to point out mistakes, ignoring the fact that sometimes child needs more encouragement than criticism.

On the other hand, children are also to blame for their impatience and less attention to parents. We work hard and are so desperate to win praise and applause. When we don’t get what is expected, we easily are drown into disappointment, become angry, start complaining, and lose the patience to calm down and think deeply. Naturally, we fail to find out how deep our parents love us and how proud they are knowing we achieve a lot.

The missing twenty percentage mirrors the generation gap. Luckily, as long as parents and children make joint efforts, we can finally bridge the gap, understand each other and share a common idea.

Word came that a reading festival would be held by our school and there is a need for a picture for advertisement and I am writing to give my opinion. From my perspective , I am in favor of the picture in the top right corner.

As is vividly depicted in that picture, around the table sit three kids with a couple of books in their hands, having a heated discussion about the contents and sharing their thoughts for the themes, which shows their dedication and passion for reading.

Basically, several reasons are listed for my preference. First, nothing is more attractive than a proper and realistic picture. This picture serves as an epitome of our daily reading scene in the school and it is apt to let students recall the joy and harvest while reading.

Second, this picture stands for the fun of sharing and exchanging ideas. With regard to reading, there is a saying that there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand peoples eyes. After reading, bits and pieces of thoughts will appear in our mind, so it is beneficial to have a better understanding after comparing notes about what we have read.

From what is mentioned above, I, undoubtedly, approve of the picture in the top right corner. Thus, I would appreciate it if you could take my proposal into consideration and I wish this festival a complete success.

I’m writing to express some of my opinions towards our school’s English newspaper.

In my point of view, among health, entertainment and culture, I would choose ―entertainment‖ to be the one to be eliminated. Although it’s necessary for students to get some relaxation, I’m worried that the main news the entertainment column offers will eventually turn into celebrity gossip, which is neither helpful to the growth of students nor to the development of our school. We are already living in a world that is crammed with useless information, and there’s no need to add some more. The main focus of the newspaper is supposed to be placed on the students –not Brad Pitt’s new movie.

As for the column to be added, I highly recommend the ―career planning‖. I know that right now a large number of students still have absolutely no idea about what they truly want to become in the future, so it’s quite urgent and necessary to give students basic understanding of what different kinds of jobs are like and what kind of qualities are required for different jobs. This may help students gain a better understanding of their strengths and weakness and thus figure out their goals. To me, it’s much more meaningful than ―fashion‖ or ―readers’ feedback‖. I’ve read about your poster about selecting the location of an exhibition of famous paintings, and I suggest that the museum is a nice place.

First of all, compared with those libraries, the museum is an excellent place which inspires our eagerness for knowledge. It’s certain that visitors will be more absorbed in the fantastic surroundings. By contrast, I don’t think those normal libraries in communities match well with paintings with great fame an high prices.

While some of my friends insist that libraries are more convenient, I maintain that since the transportation system in Shanghai is very advanced and the museum is located in the city centre, it’s not a bit difficult for us to reach the show.

All in all, I am firmly convinced that the museum is a better place for this grand painting exhibition, and it will be a great honor if I could study those wonderful paintings in the best museum in Shanghai. I hope that you will accept my suggestion.

Today I spent two periods of time in Amy’s class in a primary school, watching the pupils learn how to paint. What impressed me most was Amy’s painting. In some way, it broadened my horizons..

Looking back at the two pictures drawn by her, I have to say it was of great amusement to see her unique way of painting. At first, she tried making a nice design with both of her feet on a broad piece of white paper blanket ,which ,frankly speaking, was no painting at all, for you could see no art but one footprint after another. Actually, even Amy herself was not satisfied with it. Surprisingly, she didn’t give up or feel frustrated as I hadexpected but stopped to think for a while, looking at her teacher eagerly.Then, with her blueprint in mind plus the teacher’s guidance, she changed the way, using her hands instead. Painting –brush in hand, she sat properlystraight at a desk, paying more attention to her work. Much to my joy, this time she managed to draw some birds flying high in the skysun, which obviously demonstrated reflected her remarkable progress.

Simple and funny as it seemed, on second thought ,what the pupil did was well worth thinking. It’s generally accepted that students , especially little children have great potential in their growth and development. Nevertheless, when it comes to gaining knowledge or skills , personal efforts can make a difference even though timely care help from others such as parents or teachers is necessary. Had Amy given up halfway following an unsatisfactory semi-product, the successful work accomplished by her later would have been unthinkable hard to imagine.

What a pleasant surprise it is to know that our school will hold a Reading Festival! Hearing that the committee need select a picture as the publicity photo, I intend to voice my opinion that I am fond of the one on the left corner.

Actually, the three photos are equally attractive to us students. If we must elect one to publicize, I prefer the one that is composed of books, coffee, musical notes and instrument, which creates the an agreeable and relaxed atmosphere.

Recently, having been delighted to see the notice that there is a need of our reading festival to make a choice among three creative pictures for advertisement. After a long time comparison, the picture on the bottom right corner earns my favor.

the next week, the man next to me raised his hand and volunteered this story:xxxwhile making my list, i remembered an incident from high school. i grew up in a small town in iowa. there was a sheriff in town that none of us kids liked. one night, my two buddies and i decided to play a trick on sheriff brown. after drinking a few beers, we found a can of red paint, climbed the tall water tank in the middle of town, and wrote, on the tank, in bright red letters: sheriff brown is an . the next day, the town arose to see our glorious sign. within two hours, sheriff brown had my two pals and me in his office. my friends confessed and i lied, denying the truth. no one ever found out.xxxnearly 20 years later, sheriff brown/'s name appears on my list. i didn/'t even know if he was still alive. last weekend, i dialed information in my hometown back in iowa. sure enough, there was a roger brown still listed. i dialed his number. after a few rings, i heard: `hello?/' i said: `sheriff brown?’ pause. `yup.’ `well, this is jimmy calkins. and i want you to know that i did it.’ pause. `i knew it!’ he yelled back. we had a good laugh and a lively discussion. his closing words were: `jimmy, i always felt badly for you because your buddies got it off their chest, and i knew you were carrying it around all these years. i want to thank you for calling me...for your sake.’xxx

jimmy inspired me to clear up all 101 items on my list. it took me almost two years, but became the springboard and true inspiration for my career as a conflict mediator. no matter how difficult the conflict, crisis or situation, i always remember that it/'s never too late to clear up the past and begin resolution.

Shanghai is an international city ,which has attracted so many foreigners from all over the world. There are many beautiful places such as the oriental pearl TV tower, Huangpu River and so on. Of these places of interest, the oriental pearl TV tower is so attractive that none has left Shanghai without visiting it . It is so tall that all the visitors have to go upstairs by elevators.

The view from the top of the tower is very grand especially at night . Besides this ,enjoying the beautiful view on a ship by the Huangpu River is very exciting . The beautiful lights from the tall buildings along the river make the river a so beautiful place. During the river tour we can also see the outer part of the oriental pearl TV tower. Consequently, I strongly propose that the painting exhibition is to be held in the Shanghai Museum.

My favorite city is Shanghai, which is a very medern and beautiful city. Shanghai is located in the east of China and it is the biggest city in China. I have been to Shanghai for many times and it has left a deep impression in my mind.

I enjoyed the view from the top of the Jing Mao Building and I was attracted by the traditional temple mixed with modern skyscapers. You see, Shanghai is a city of both tradition and development. I really like it.

An Unforgettable Lesson

In my life I have experienced many important things. But perhaps the most unforgettable thing which is really worth mentioning is the lesson given by my Chinese teacher just after she had an accident.

One morning just before our Chinese lesson, we were told our Chinese teacher, Miss Liu, had had an accident. One of her legs was badly injured and she couldn’t come to teach us. Shanghai is my favorite city. I like it because I was born in there, and a lot of my family members and my friends live there. 一、前言

近年来，不少学者已经意识到大学英语教材的实用性并就此进行了相关的研究，卞树荣（2006）从社会语言学角度分析了《大学体验英语》的实用性；邓贤贵、张坚（2007）论述了《新视野大学英语》、《新理念大学英语》、《新编大学英语》、《大学体验英语》、《全新大学英语》、《21世纪大学英语》等大学英语教材均在实用性等方面做出了不懈努力；华荣（2008）在内容组织上论述了《大学体验英语》交际内容的实用性；魏琳（2009）通过调查发现，从学生的选择上看，语言的实用性已被摆在了第一位，越来越多的学生已不再把英语学习当成应试的工具，而是希望通过学习能与人交流，无论是口头的还是笔头的，甚至同专业挂钩，达到学以致用；王帅（2009）指出《实用英语》的实用性明显加强了日常生活、工作与经济、科技发展联系密切的实用文体的阅读。

至于考研英语作文的研究，主要集中体现在：对某一年考研英语作文的点评，如曾微（2006）、许建平（2007，2008，2009）；如何提高考研英语作文的应试技巧，如王静（2005）、吴蓓蓓（2005）；分析考研英语看图作文及相应的对策，如杨小蛮（2005）易立梅（2008）等也曾有论述。

由以上分析我们不难发现，很少学者从考试的视角来论述大学英语教材的实用性，尽管滕德明等（2006）从教材编写中的原则、需求分析和实用性角度，在分析了2001至2005年5年间大学英语四、六级考试及硕士研究生入学考试英语作文题和在对学生、教师、社会的需求的分析后，指出了《21世纪大学英语读写教程》实用性的不足并提出了相应的建议。但此研究仅仅通过2001至2005年5年间的考试英语写作来研究了就某一大学英语教材实用性，这尚不能足以较全面的了解大学英语教材的实用性。为此，本文将结合近20年来大学英语四、六级考试及硕士研究生入学考试英语作文题，来研究大学英语教材的实用性，以期为今后大学英语教材的编写提供一些参考。

二、大学英语四、六级考试及考研作文的情况分析

为了更直观的反映近20年来大学英语四、六级考试作文题。

通过对近20年来大学英语四、六级考试的作文题目进行整理、归类，我们可以做出这样的总结，总体而言，大学英语四、六级考试作文题材呈现出多样性，包括解释说明类的议论文、书信类、应用文、描写文、图表类等。在这些题材当中，以解释说明类的议论文居多，图表类则显得过少。

然而，从历年考研英语作文的得分情况来看，多数考生的看图作文得分不高，考生普遍反映此类作文很难。为此，很有必要对此类作文做一些简要分析，看图作文可以分为图画式作文和图表式作文（杨小蛮，2005）：（1）图画式作文是用漫画、照片、图片为载体，考查学生对图画蕴涵的寓意或者思想内涵理解表达能力，在逻辑的考查上，更偏重学生的总结能力；（2）图表式作文是以图表为载体，考查学生对图表中的数据所包含的逻辑关系的挖掘与表达能力，在逻辑的考查上，由于图表是数据的形象化表达，更偏重于学生的数据整理与归纳能力。而这正是众多考生所缺乏的知识及能力。图表类作文，在历年大学英语四、六级考试中出现不多，大学英语教材中类似的图表也极少出现。由于题型不对口，考生在审题、立意、表达上都与命题者的要求大相径庭（任荣，2001）。另外，根据最新的2010年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语（一）考试大纲，在英语的写作A部分，今年新增根据所给汉语文章写英文摘要的内容，并且在大纲样题中有所体现，这是很重要的变化。有鉴于此，我们很有必要对现行的大学英语教材的体裁进行统计和分析。

三、关于大学英语教材实用性的讨论

由于受到文章篇幅所限，本文选取笔者教学中所使用的《大学英语》（翟象俊、李荫华主编，上海教育出版社，1991年）及《大学体验英语综合教程》（宁春岩主编，高等教育出版社，2002年）进行分析。

首先，本文对翟象俊及李荫华主编的《大学英语》中的体裁进行统计。

再看由宁春岩主编的《大学体验英语综合教程》课文中的体裁。

为了进一步说明现行大学英语教材的实用性问题，下面就《大学英语》（翟象俊、李荫华主编，上海教育出版社，1991年）及《大学体验英语综合教程》（宁春岩主编，高等教育出版社，2002年）中专门涉及到写作方面的内容逐一统计如下。

《大学英语》的第一册重点放在培养学生的阅读能力上，也兼顾写和说的能力，写作练习主要是培养学生连词成句的能力：使用连词、缩写句成词（组）、从句、简洁写法、从属连词用法、省略法、简洁表达法、同位语；第二册的写作练习主要是培养学生连句成段的能力，包括连贯、并列连词和连接副词、由主题句引出段、 从属连词和关系代词、句子逻辑顺序、词和词组及从句的并列写法、转折等；第三册的写作，从连句成段训练入手，要求逐步做到按提示写成段文章，初步培养学生在语篇水平上的写作能力，其中的第5、6单元有看图作文；第四册的写作，从基础训练入手，要求逐步做到按提示写成段文章，初步培养学生在语篇水平上的写作能力，第7单元有看图作文。

而在《大学体验英语综合教程》，写作练习分为一般写作（General Writing）和实用写作（Practical Writing）两部分。前者侧重培养学生的essay-writing的能力，后者培养学生阅读和模拟套写在交际环境下的常用应用文的能力。第一、二册的一般写作以纠正学生写作中的句子层面的结构错误为主；第三、四册以段落、篇章写作为主，以培养学生在清楚表达意思、整体构思、谋篇布局等方面的能力。

就应用文写法(Practical Writing)而言，涉及如下的内容：第一册有名片、道歉信、海报、 储蓄表、订单、体育比赛安排表、通知、邀请函，第二册包含了入学申请表、个人广告、旅游保险、贺卡、健康表、私人信件、网络布告，第三册则有会议邀请函、获奖证书、广告、论文征集广告、网上课程安排、旅游行程安排、公共预警通告（_）、政府通告（反战反暴力游行），第四册安排了工作广告、演出安排表、投诉信、招聘广告、道歉信、问卷调查、保险单填写、提纲写法等应用文写作知识。

四、综合分析

综合上文对四六级及考研英语作文的分析，可以看出，四六级作文的题材主要以写解释说明类的议论文为主，偶尔出现图表类和应用文类的作文；考研英语作文主要是图表类作文和应用文写作，从2010年开始新增根据所给汉语文章写英文摘要的题型。这两个对教学起很大指导作用的考试在写作方面有共同的要求，即都要求考生掌握应用文写作，而双方的不同之处在于四六级作文侧重考察考生能否根据所给的题目用英语清晰流畅地阐述自己的观点，因而题材多为解释说明类的议论文；而考研英语作文侧重考察考生观察分析、总结规律的能力，因而题材多为图表类作文。一套讲究实用性的教材在写作练习部分应该注意两者兼顾。

根据本文第三部分对写作方面内容的统计可见，《大学体验英语综合教程》较之于《大学英语》有了很大的改善，更注重实用性，也就给予应用文写作更多的关注，这对大学生的英语四、六级考试及今后的工作无疑是极为重要得。然而，《大学体验英语综合教程》极少涉及看图写作方面的知识，根据所给汉语文章写英文摘要这方面的练习几乎为零。就考研英语写作而言，是极为不利的。从这个意义上而言，今后编写大学英语教材需要考虑到考研英语写作的实际需要，也就是要增加看图写作及如何提炼文章的摘要等方面的内容，可以满足大学生考研的需要，使得大学英语教材更具实用性。

五、结束语

纵观全文，本文在总结、归纳我国近20年大学英语四、六级考试及全国硕士研究生入学考试中英语作文题目的基础上，对《大学英语》（翟象俊、李荫华主编，上海教育出版社，1991年）及《大学体验英语综合教程》（宁春岩主编，高等教育出版社，2002年）的中与英语写作密切关系的内容，并就这两套教材的实用性，进行了分析、讨论，指出这两套教材的实用性尚存在的主要问题。这是今后大学英语教材编写时候应该考虑的问题。
